Another Stargazer

So after that, we exchanged a little bit each time we bumped into each other. Mostly, we talked about whether there were stars, or how to do star-gazing.

On a late autumn night, the sky was full of stars, I learned his name.

"Look, we can see the Pleiades star cluster today!" His voice was unusually exciting. I was curious about the stars, so the tiredness from today's long shift didn't faze me.

I asked him to show me where it was.

"Do you know the stories of The Seven Sisters of Atlas?"

I shook my head. The sky was full of stars, gazing at them really reminded me of my hometown back in the cape. That was my only thought.

"In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were the seven daughters of the Titan Atlas. Atlas was forced to hold up the sky for eternity and was therefore unable to protect his daughters. The seven sisters were fiercely pursued by the Hunter Orion because Orion was looking for Pleione, their mother. So Zeus turned them into stars to protect them"

He showed me the Orion star clusters. As Greek mythology said, Orion - The Hunter really looks like the man holding his bow.

"And if you look from straight from this, you'll see a cluster of stars!"

He was so close to my face, I could see his dense eyelids, and hear the music from his headphone. It seemed to be a piece of classic jazz music.

"You see, Maia, Alcyone, the two brightest rival stars; Asterope and Celaeno, are the weaker ones and shine dimmer; Taygete, decided to turn into a doe by Artemis to escape Zeus's clutches; final star in the cluster is Electra, the third brightest star, who gave birth to Dardanus, who later became the founder of the Ancient city of Troy"

I couldn't grasp what he said right at that moment.

"Maia, Alcyone, Asterope, Celaeno, Taigete, and Electra... Doesn't it make only six sisters?"

"It's Taygete. Yes. Merope, who is known as The Lost Pleiad. She is always in hiding because her husband was a mortal... King Sisyphus, whose punishment is to roll a heavy stone up a hill to the edge of heaven though it always rolls back down... Somewhat similar to their father, Atlas, who always keeps the weight of the world on his shoulder... Quite a family, wouldn't you think so?"

All this time, his eyes sparkled.

I was seeing the whole starry sky in his black eyes.

He turned to me, with little change in his tone, he said.

"That's also the meaning of my name, Subaru. What's your name?"

"I'm Chung" I replied Subaru.

Subaru, the Pleiad star clusters.

"Is that the reason you like gazing at the stars?"

Subaru looked up the sky again, and his voice was resonant on a November night.

"I know one of the stars"

Subaru is accompanied, even when looking at the stars all by himself. Is that his mom, or dad, or loved one...

I didn't ask Subaru. My hand couldn't reach his shoulder for a consoling pat.

"Could you help me open the door, Chung?" Subaru asked.
